Four Best Garage Floor Finishes

0

If you are looking to add a little bit of flare to your garage, one of the first and best places you can start is on the floor. Sure, concrete floors are functional, but with some effort, they can become attractive and comfortable.

One of the issues, however, is that there are a few options to choose from and most people have a difficult time doing so. One way you can think about it is to put it into two primary categories: coatings and coverings.

Coatings are put on with a roller or a brush and stick to the floor. Paint and epoxy rule this category.

Coverings are products that you put on the top of the floor. They can be removed or moved whenever you want. Tiles and mats fit into this category.

Any good garage floor coating begins with repairing and preparing the concrete surface.

Coatings

Coatings on garage floors are made up of two different products: paint and epoxy. They may seem like the same thing, but they aren’t. If your garage floor is stained with grease, oil, or rust, you can give it some new life with some Paint. Latex paint is best on concrete flooring and is relatively cheap and easy to apply.

For a tough looking surface, you will want to consider epoxy. It’s common to hear somebody call it a paint, but it’s not. Preparation and application is a little more complex than it is with paint. Before you start, you will also have to choose the epoxy you want to use.

Coverings

The easy way to make your garage floor look like new is to throw carpet or another covering on top of it. However, if you want it to last and stand up to the harsh garage life, then you will want a product that is made for garage floors specifically.

There are three basic kinds of tiles for garage floors: rigid plastic tiles, plastic tiles and wood composite tiles, and flexible rubber.

There is no easier way to cover your garage floor than to roll out a mat, which come in a variety of styles, materials, and colors.

Repairs and Preparation

Coverings and coatings should not be viewed as a quick fix for slabs that are in rough condition. Oil and grease stains can make any floor look unattractive, but they can also cause an issue with paint and epoxy finishes. The coverings will also not eliminate the moisture problems and paint and epoxies won’t last long on wet concrete.

Insulation

If you are turning your garage into living space or if you want your garage to be more comfortable in hot and cold weather, then consider insulating the concrete slab.

For a garage conversion, the floor preparation is more than just adding some insulation and installing a finish floor surface. If you want to remove the garage door, you’ll also need to fill in the opening it creates.
