As winter approaches all Canadians, specifically here in Ottawa, know that the road conditions are going to change and change for the worst. Each year we see on the television news and hear on the radio about commercial driver’s becoming involved in accidents because of the conditions on the road. Sadly, the winter weather, while it can be enjoyable, wreaks havoc all over the world. However, there are ways to deal with driving in the extreme weather conditions all Canadians have come to live with.

An Idea Worth Considering

It just so happens that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has arrived at a solution for minimizing the amount of winter road accidents. The idea is a two step program that first is to begin to ensure safer road condition through increased plowing and road treatments where part two is promoting further training on how to drive in an Ottawa winter, or hazardous road conditions.

One such program already exists in Alberta, and is offered by Fleet Safety International, or (FSI). The program, (open to all), focuses on theory and increasing the student’s knowledge of driving terms. Moreover, the classes also focus on teaching a defensive mode of driving, promoting hands on training, (live driving), to reinforce old, forgotten, and build new driving habits while improving the skills simultaneously.

Expected Outcomes Upon Finishing the Course

Although the vehicles utilized in the driving portion of the class are designed as “anti-skid” vehicles each student receives a professional assessment according to a standard provided to professional drivers. Along with the hands-on training there is a classroom portion where theory  is taught through scenario training. The materials are present through multi-media and hard copy for enhanced learning.

Harsh Conditions Call for Harsh Measures

Understandably, the roads throughout North America, specifically in Ottawa, can become treacherous in the winter conditions, such as reduced visibility, and slick roads that make getting behind the wheel of any vehicle dangerous. This makes having a heightened awareness this time of year imperative to safe driving. This translates into each person driving understanding that they should prepare to brake differently, react faster, drive slower, and have greater control over their vehicle.

Additionally, it is helpful to be cognizant of the vehicle’s condition prior to the winter months. Having this knowledge will help them prepare the vehicle for the winter by putting snow tires on, ensuring the battery is in good condition, making sure there is anti-freeze in the cooling system, in addition to getting the brakes checked, and the oil changed. With all of this in mind, it makes sense to learn how to drive in the winter and the harsh conditions it brings in Ottawa.
