When it is time to get your driver’s license for the first time, or when you need to take a test to get it renewed, it is perfectly natural to be a bit nervous. However, you can overcome that and be successful in getting your license with a bit of preparation and practice.

Written Test

  1. Get a driver’s guide. In order to pass the written test, you first need to pick up a driver’s guide for your area.

  2. Read it to learn the basic rules of driving, and ask a friend to quiz you after each chapter.

  3. Review all of the material, and have your friend quiz you on the entire book.

  4. Reread the book and take your time to learn it well over the course of a couple of weeks prior to the test.

Preparing for the Practical Test

  1. Drive as much as you can to get comfortable behind the wheel. Do not forget to practice your parking skills.

  2. Follow all the proper procedures, including having a licensed driver as your passenger, as is required.

  3. Follow the laws from the driver’s manual as well, like knowing the signs, rules for passing, turn signals and everything else.

  4. If possible, drive the routes that you will be driving when you take the test.

  5. Make sure your car is in good shape. Get it tuned up, if necessary, check the tires, lights and wipers, etc.

  6. Adjust your seat and steering wheel to ensure that you feel comfortable and relaxed, and that the mirrors are positioned correctly.

Taking the Practical Test

  1. When it is time for the test, arrive early, bring identification and be friendly to the instructor.

  2. Remember to keep your eyes on the road and your hands in the proper place on the wheel. Use your signals and drive at a safe speed, at or below the limit.

  3. Try to remain confident, and do not get frustrated if you make a mistake.

  4. Do not forget to thank your examiner, and listen to his or her feedback. If you passed, great, but if not, you will definitely need to take the examiner’s advice into consideration for the next try.
