Closets are bound to get cluttered as time goes by. When you decide you need to clean them out, the task can seem quite daunting. Luckily, there are some tips you can follow to help streamline the process, and keep it from overwhelming you.

The first, and most important, step is to get rid of the excess. That means, you want to start pulling out and getting rid of the items that you do not need. This is, of course, easier said than done. It can be hard to decide what to keep and what to pitch sometimes, so here are some rules you can follow, when it comes to eliminating clothes you do not need. Get rid of clothing that:

·         Is out of style

·         Does not fit

·         Is uncomfortable

·         Is not a color you like to wear

·         Has stains, holes or is otherwise worn out

·         You have not worn in a year.

Whatever clothes you have that are still in decent shape can be donated or sold, but anything that is not wearable should be disposed of in another manner.

After the first round of toss-outs, you will have to take a closer look at what you still have left. Depending on storage space, you may need to narrow the field even more. To do this, you may have to put like items together, and then removing duplicates and the items you like the least.

Now you can pull everything out and evaluate the closet. Empty it completely and then put all the items into groups of similar things. Think about what will need to go where within the closet, so you can move on to the next step.

It is also important to take out and throw away broken hangers and other things that need to be thrown away. That way you will be able to see exactly how much space you have to replace your clothes and/or other items in an organized way.

Come up with some new storage solutions. If your closet needs some added features, like more shelves, another rod or storage bins, this is the time to put them in.  Everyone does not have exactly the same storage needs.

Before you run out and spend money on organization kits though, check around your house. You may have already have items that you can use to make your closet more convenient, and functional. Make sure that you are using all the space, from top to bottom, but ensure that whatever you use most often is easily accessible, without having to move other things to get to them.

Baskets, hanging dividers, drawers, double rods or hooks are just a few of the elements that can add to your closet’s storage capabilities.

Put everything in its place. Finally, you can put away all the items you decided to keep. Put like items together, and make sure that everything you will need on a regular basis is easy to get out (and thus, easy to put back away when you are done with it).
