Often, we overlook a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the road because there simply isn’t enough time. Thankfully, there is an abundance of destinations around Ottawa that you can take advantage of that are within a one day’s drive. These ideas and recommendations will get you that driving fix without the need for much planning or time! Not only is it more convenient to explore local attractions with your vehicle, it also allows you to support local Ontario communities, business and entertainment.
Manotick and Merrickville (30m to 1h Distance)
Take county road 73 south from Ottawa to enjoy this local gem. Following the Rideau River south, you reach the village itself where you can visit Watson’s Mill which is one of the best preserved mills in Ontario. From Manotick you can travel to Merrickville via city Rd. 19, which is the fastest route, more scenic routes are available as well. Once arrived, The Depot & Blockhouse offers great historical information about the area and the Rideau. There is also a complimentary set of locks here, and you might see boats locking through on your visit. Many routes exist that follow the Rideau River, allowing for truly scenic driving throughout.
Smiths Falls (1h Distance)
Part of the UNESCO Rideau Heritage Route system, Smiths Falls is the “heart of the Rideau Canal.” The town is known for recreational boating in the canal system and as a local tourist attraction. By following the river past both Manotick and Merrickville, you can take advantage of the multitude of activities here like dining, rafting and dining.
Thousand Islands (2h15m Distance)
The “Thousand Islands-Frontenac Arch” region was named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2002. If you enjoy natural beauty while taking advantage of wonderful weather this location is perfect for that ideal drive. Take advantage of scenic driving across the famous waterway with its crystal clear water, crisp green forests and local attractions.
Prince Edward County – The Loyalist Parkway (2h30m Distance)
One of the most scenic trips in the province, it is also the location that involves the most driving on our list. Located two hours and thirty minutes away from Ottawa, you’ll get to enjoy a good deal of driving before hitting the scenic loyalist parkway. This road takes a breathtaking route along Lake Ontario’s coast via the isthmus of Prince Edward. It provides a great experience for the heritage tourist, because it follows the course of the loyalist settlement that began in 1784 following the American Revolution.
